How to obtain Italian citizenship through marriage?

The applicant must prove that they have been married to an Italian citizen for at least 2 years (if the couple resides in Italy) or 3 years (if the couple resides outside of Italy). If the couple has children from this union, the marriage period is halved, that is, 1 year for residents in Italy and 1.5 years for residents abroad.

Required documents?

- CERTIFICATION OF PROFESSORSHIP OF THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE AT A LEVEL NOT LOWER THAN B1 OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCES (CEFR)

- Birth certificate transcribed in Italian; (UPDATE OF MARITAL STATUS)

- Original birth certificate translated into Italian, with Hague Apostille (if the country of birth is among the Hague Convention countries);

- Criminal records from all countries where the person has lived for more than 6 months, translated and with a Hague Apostille (if the country of birth is a Hague Convention country);
- Payment receipt of 250 Euros (updated 2021) - bank transfer to MINISTERO DELL'INTERNO D.L.C.I. - CITTADINANZA);
- Applicant's original valid passport;
- Spouse's original passport;
